Monasteries in Ireland were very wealthy. Many of them held thousands of acres of land and they got great gifts of money and jewellery and gold. They also held fairs - as in Kilfenora - and took money from each person who came to sell their cattle or butter or sheep. The money which the monks got, they used for beautiful chalices (cups) and silk altar cloths and manuscripts.
Try to see the Ardagh Chalice at the National Museum in Dublin. If you can't see the original, ask the librarian for a book where you can see a picture of it.
