By World War II the submarine had a surface speed of about 18 knots using diesel engines and a submerged speed of 8 knots using electric motors. It was forced to surface periodically in order to recharge its batteries.

.Imagine that you are Ed, as an old man, and that you want to tell your grandchildren about your experiences of being captured in  a German submarine. Write about what it would have been like and how exciting it was to be rescued by your sister and her cousins. What would life have been like in the cramped conditions on board the submarine. Start off with the words 'When I was only twenty-one years of age…'
